ROCKIN' THE PAY-JACKERS: Cowards

Wednesday, September 28, 2005

The Susquehanna pay-jackers didn't go to the public before performing their late-night perfidy. So on Monday an angry public incensed by self-serving lawmakers went to them.

With signs and slogans and a 25-foot inflated pink pig, they congregated at the Capitol, 1,500 strong despite the rain, to deliver what rally organizer Eric Epstein called "a political enema."

Their outrage apparent, their resolve rock-solid, they delivered 129,000 petition signatures demanding repeal of the 16 percent to 54 percent constitutionally challenging pay raises the Legislature voted for itself. Judges, the governor and top executive officials also are receiving raises.

But consistent with lawmakers' prior cowardice, not one among the principal pillagers was there to receive the long-overdue public clyster.

Gov. Ed Rendell? He was in Philadelphia, no doubt hiding out. And what of Senate President Pro Tempore Robert Jubelirer, R-Altoona, and House Speaker John Perzel, R-Philadelphia? They weren't available either, arrogant to the end -- or perhaps hiding under their desks.

Where, oh where were Supreme Court Chief Justice Ralph Cappy -- who helped orchestrate the outrage -- and House Minority Leader H. William DeWeese, D-Waynesburg, so loquacious in trying to legitimize the raises?

Regardless of any post-rally explanations or meaningless mea culpas, Pennsylvania's leaders once again have demonstrated their flagrant disregard of the public's growing outrage.

That's because cowards are incapable of accountability -- or leadership. In the face of adversity, their only recourse is to retreat.
