From First Lady to Fence Sitter

From First Lady to Fence Sitter Where's Hillary Clinton on John Roberts? -- With each press release, the Dem fissure over Roberts becomes more clear, and more confusing. Leading the "aye" team: Pat Leahy, perhaps the only pro-Roberts Dem from New England. Leading the "no" camp: Harry Reid, perhaps the only anti-Roberts Dem from a mountain state. And the leader of fence-sitting Dems, we believe, is the junior senator from NY, the only '08 Dem who could truly influence what message her party sends the WH on Roberts. -- But for now, at least, HRC has chosen to keep her head down, refusing even to signal which way she leans on a vote that, either way, will affect her own future, near and far. -- To be sure, the left wants a "no." Clintonite Begala said yesterday that no Dem who wants the '08 WH nod can afford to back this one. One liberal blogger today notes Clinton "owes a good portion of her political success" to post-Anita Hill feminism, "So how can she still... STILL be on the [expletive] fence about John Roberts?" -- Will Clinton rally her base? Will she move to the middle?

Quote of the Day

"President Bush has produced a nominee that probably qualifies, and I would support him." -- Tom Daschle on Roberts, Sioux Falls Argus Leader, 9/22
