Group pushes Specter to back Roberts

The anti-abortion-rights group Concerned Women for America (CWA) is applying pressure on Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) to back Supreme Court Chief Justice nominee John Roberts.

“When it comes time for the committee to vote, Chairman Specter’s promise of fairness should lead him to the inescapable conclusion that it couldn’t possibly be fair not to vote for this exceptionally qualified nominee,” said the CWA chief counsel, Jan LaRue.

She acknowledged that “I’ve been very tough on Senator Specter … but fairness requires me to applaud him for running a full and fair hearing, as he promised to do.”

The CWA statement appears to dispel some concerns voiced by Republicans on Capitol Hill that Roberts had alienated some conservatives with his statements on abortion and judicial precedent.
