Limo or car?
Child curious about House speaker's travel mode

PITTSBURGH (AP) Reporters weren't the only ones eager to question House Speaker John M. Perzel during his recent visit to an elementary school.
After Perzel read a children's book to a fourth-grade class at Beechwood Elementary School on Wednesday, one student asked him whether he came to the school in ``a limo.'' Perzel answered by quibbling over the description.
``Did I come in a limo? I came in a car,'' he said.
``Could we go see the limo?'' the child inquired.
``Yeah,'' the speaker said, ``if there was a limo out there, we could go see it.''
In fact, a black Lincoln Town Car with limousine plates delivered Perzel to the school, where he dropped off 100 books collected at his annual Speaker's Ball, and the car was waiting for him as he exited the building.
Perzel's campaign committee paid for the vehicle, his spokeswoman, Beth Williams, confirmed Thursday.
Reporters asked Perzel about the pay raise law that the Legislature approved without debate or public notice in July, increasing legislative pay by 16 to 54 percent.
Perzel, whose own salary increased from $109,000 to $146,000, brushed aside the questions and left with Williams in a sport utility vehicle.
An aide let the driver of the car know that it was no longer needed.
