5 MINUTES FOR MARRIAGE IN PENNSYLVANIA...

5 MINUTES FOR MARRIAGE...

Dear friends,

1. There is a new urgency in the battle to protect marriage in Pennsylvania . For those who still think our Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) will protect Pennsylvania from redefining marriage, take a look at what happened in Iowa last week.

Des Moines Register - A Polk County judge on Thursday struck down Iowa's law banning gay marriage. The ruling by Judge Robert Hanson concluded that the state's prohibition on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and he ordered the Polk County recorder to issue marriage licenses to six gay couples. In order to "keep up" with the latest news, "Pennsylvania for Marriage" will send weekly updates on related articles, news stories and tidbits to keep you in the loop. We have news here at home and news from other states and beyond. What happens "there" can happen "here."

2. On the home front, there's talk that Senator Vince Fumo has plans to introduce legislation to allow for "civil unions." Though Senator Fumo's spokesperson backed away from civil union language, this is a story to watch with alarm and to call all Pennsylvania legislators to support a Marriage Protection Amendment today! (Visit: http://www.legis.state.pa.us/ for your legislator's contact information) or visit PA Family Institute's Citizen Action Center at http://www.pafamily.org/citizenactioncenter to contact them directly.

Philadelphia Daily News - Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal wrote in his column this week that a Fumo aide had contacted him to say the senator thought "the time has come for civil-union legislation to be introduced in Pennsylvania." 3. Finally, for further fodder for the common sense crowd, here's a few more reasons why marriage between one man and one woman works.

Mercator.net - The continued provision of preferential support for parents and children over other types of unions is vital for society. Read more... http://www.mercatornet.com/articles/marriage_deserves_more_because_it_gives_more/
