New York to allow illegal immigrants to get drivers' licenses just like 9/11 terrorists

New York to allow illegal immigrants to get drivers' licenses

Associated Press - September 22, 2007 3:15 AM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - Officials are hoping that new rules allowing illegal immigrants with valid foreign passports to get New York driver's licenses will make the state's roads safer.

Under a new policy staring in December, immigrants regardless of their status, will be allowed to provide a current, verifiable foreign passport in applying for a license. State law currently requires license applicants to prove their identity, date of birth, fitness to drive and a social security number or ineligibility letter.

Governor Elliot Spitzer says the new rules should lead to fewer car accidents, lower insurance premiums and will help bring people "out the shadows" and into American society.

The governor says there are as many as one million illegal immigrants in New York, many of whom drive without licenses or insurance.

Similiar policies have been adopted in Utah, New Mexico and other states.
