Evening Bulletin: Schwartz - 'Present' on Christmas, 'Yea' on Ramadan

"I'm very disturbed by the fact [Congresswoman Schwartz]...forgot that it was Muslims who were the terrorists of 9/11," said Diane Gramley, president of the American Family Association (AFA), the traditional family values organization which is drawing attention to her vote.

"I don't know if it is an attempt to downplay our Christian heritage, but it is a very troubling trend," she said.

Schwartz: 'Present' On Christmas, 'Yea' On Ramadan

By: Jenny DeHuff , The Bulletin

Harrisburg - One Pennsylvania Congresswoman supports the recognition of one religious holiday, but refrained from recognizing Christmas Sunday evening.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution acknowledging Christmas and the Christian faith, and all but 18 Democrats voted in support of it - one being Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery Counties).

In October, the representative, along with all 19 Pennsylvania members, voted to support recognition of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month. She issued no such grace to Christmas.

A spokeswoman for Congresswoman Schwartz did not return phone calls for comment at press time.

The following Congresspersons voted "nay" to the resolution, Rep. Gary Ackerman, of New York, Rep. Yvette Clarke, of New York, Rep. Diana DeGette, of Colorado, Rep. Alcee Hastings, of Florida, Rep. Barbara Lee, of California, Rep. Jim McDermott of Washington, Rep. Robert C. Scott, of Virginia, Rep. Fortney Pete Stark, of California, and Rep. Lynn Woolsey, of California.

In addition to Rep. Schwartz, the following Congresspersons voted "present" to the resolution, Rep. John Conyers, Jr. of Michigan, Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, Rep. Rush Holt of New Jersey, Rep. Donald M. Payne of New Jersey, Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz of Florida, Rep. Peter Welch of Vermont and Rep. John A. Yarmuth of Kentucky.
