AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

September 27, 2005

Pornography Awareness Week is October 30 through November 6

Yesterday the AFA of PA faxed a request to Governor Ed Rendell’s office asking him to proclaim October 30-November 6, 2005 as Pornography Awareness Week (PAW) here in Pennsylvania. He needs to hear from others requesting that he issue this proclamation.

Why not request that your County Commissioners or local elected officials proclaim that week as Pornography Awareness Week? It may just take one or two people approaching them via phone to successfully get a proclamation issued!

Below is the suggested wording of two PAW proclamations – these are the ones that the Governor received yesterday.

(Proclamation # 1) SUGGESTED WORDING FOR PORNOGRAPHY AWARENESS WEEK PROCLAMATION:

WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that obscenity is not protected speech under the First Amendment;

WHEREAS, the sanctity of American homes has been invaded by porn magazines, video porn, dial-a-porn, cable porn, radio porn, and computer porn;

WHEREAS, pornography inflicts tremendous suffering and damage to individuals, families, children, business districts, communities and our nation;

WHEREAS, in this era of escalating violence, pornography features and promotes sadomasochism, rape and incest;

WHEREAS, children are increasingly sexually molesting other children in imitation of what they've seen;

WHEREAS, there are state and federal anti-obscenity laws on the books to protect public safety, public morality and public health;

WHEREAS, the obscenity laws are uniquely grounded in community standards;

WHEREAS, millions of Americans throughout this great nation will be observing Pornography Awareness Week in many different ways; Now therefore, I __________________________ of ____________________ do hereby proclaim the week of October 30-November 6, 2005 as Pornography Awareness Week in ___________________..

(Proclamation # 2) ANOTHER SUGGESTION FOR WORDING OF PROCLAMATION:

WHEREAS, I urge all residents of the ___________ of _____________________ to join the battle against pornography since pornography degrades and dehumanizes our fellow human beings and hold no place in a decent society; and

WHEREAS, The United States Supreme Court has ruled that obscenity is not protected as free speech, and since the _____________of _____________________ is committed to enforcing laws against hard-core pornography; and

WHEREAS, we, as parents and leaders, have an important obligation to keep pornography out of the hands of our children; and I would urge all parents to carefully supervise their children's access to television, movies, and the Internet; and

WHEREAS, if we are united and involved, we can help protect our most precious resource -- our children;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that I (we) ________________________, Of the ___________ of ________________________, do hereby proclaim October 30 through November 6, 2005, Pornography Awareness Week in the _____________ of _______________________ and would urge the local communities to join us in sending a clear message that pornography is not welcomed in our area.
