 | | 1) What Do These Lawmakers Have In Common? What do these lawmakers have in common besides the fact that they are all talking about exercising some fiscal restraint when it comes to spending money on the Katrina recovery effort? "I don't believe that everything that should happen in Louisiana should be paid for by the rest of the country. I believe there are certain responsibilities that are due the people of Louisiana." - Senator Tom Coburn (NYT, 09/16) "We know we need to help, but throwing more and more money without accountability at this is not going to solve the problem." - Senator Jim DeMint (NYT, 09/16) "We all agree that we are willing to write whatever check is needed for Katrina, but I do not want to take a great human tragedy of this generation and compound it with a huge fiscal tragedy for the future." - Congressman Jeb Hensarling (Roll Call, 09/15) "There's no shortage of places where the federal government can tighten its belt to pay the cost of the hurricane recovery effort. Let's face it, after years of uninterrupted growth, the federal government is bloated." - Congressman Jeff Flake (WaPo, 09/17) All of these lawmakers were elected with Club member support! Those who are fighting hardest in Congress to offset the cost of Katrina spending are those who got there with huge financial support from Club for Growth members.
| | 2) Tom Coburn: the Senate's Fiscal Skunk Robert Novak had a great article about Tom Coburn earlier this week. Coburn has practically been on a one-man mission to cut spending in the spendthrift Senate. From the article: Coburn, a freshman Republican from Oklahoma, telephoned Joshua Bolten, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), to ask support for $15.3 billion in offsets based on the administration's own proposed terminations and spending reductions. Bolten politely informed the senator that the administration's hands were full dealing with Katrina's aftermath. Coburn told me he did not blame Bolten but his superiors. The superior he meant was George W. Bush. The full article is here. I encourage you to read it.
| | 3) The Club on TV The Club has been all over the news lately. On Friday, I was on CNBC's Morning Call program urging for fiscal restraint in the wake of the Katrina recovery effort. You can watch the interview here (Windows Media file). The New York Times has also provided coverage on a press conference that I did with Senators Coburn and DeMint ahead of President Bush's primetime speech. We urged, and will continue to urge, the White House to offset the costs of the recovery effort. And, it now appears, we left a strong impression on the President. Bush has indicated that spending cuts would indeed be necessary to help finance the recovery costs. But that doesn't mean we are going to let up on the pressure to actually make it happen! Looking ahead, David Keating, the Club's executive director, will be on CNBC this morning debating liberal economist Peter Orzag about the Katrina recovery process and the federal government's proper role in it. It is scheduled for 10:20am EDT. I hope you can tune in.
