AFA of PA ACTION ALERT

May 17, 2007

1.)    Good News!

2.)    Look Closely at Some of the Judges Who Won the Primary Election!

3.)    S 1105 -  Hate Crimes Bill Update

1.) Thank you to all who made calls to your member of Congress!  The Meehan Amendment (H.R. 2093) which would have placed restrictions on the AFA of PA and other grassroots organizations was defeated in the House Judiciary Committee.  Looks like Republican Congressmen Smith and Lungren as well as Democratic Congressmen Conyers and Davis spoke against the amendment!  During the debate in the House Judiciary Committee on H.R. 1592 (the Hate –Thought- Crimes bill) earlier this month, they were on opposite sides of the issue!

2.)Tuesday’s primary elections brought forth candidates we will be voting for in November to fill positions in the PA Supreme Court as well as PA Superior Court.  Here are the results:

Primary Winners for PA Supreme Court and vying for the two openings in November:

Republicans:  Superior Court Judge Maureen Lally-Greene of Butler county and Mike Krancer of Montgomery County

Democrat:  Supreme Court:  Superior Court Judge Debra Todd of Butler County and

Superior Court Judge Seamus McCaffery of Philadelphia

Vying for two openings on Superior Court in November:

Republican:  Allegheny County Judge Cheryl Allen and Dauphin County Judge Bruce Bratton

Democrat:  Allegheny County lawyer Christine Donohue and Philadelphia County Judge Anne Lazarus

Even though most judges refused to answer questions for voter guides because of Pennsylvania statues, some of these candidates freely and openly wrote pages of information for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Liberty City Democratic Club Outfront! PAC.

None of the four Republicans who won in the Primary Elections on Tuesday answered any of the questions posed by Liberty City.

Democratic winners on Tuesday for both the PA Supreme Court and PA Superior Court whose names will appear on the November ballot freely answered the questions!

Feel free to read the entire documents, but the pertinent answers dealing with the family are the answers to questions 12 and 14.

3.)  It now does not look like the Senate will be taking up the hate (thought) crimes bill at all this month!  Feel free to continue circulating the petition to Senators Specter and Casey opposing the hate crimes bill.
